This looks like it’s going to be a fantastic concert… In line with Nick Parnell’s philopsophy of making music available to all to enjoy, this concert will bring many classical music favourites to life on the vibes.

The concert will be on May 15 at 7pm at Angel Place. For more information on the concert visit the City Recital Hall page,  or check out Nick’s site here.

Over the years, Parnell has shared the stage with a number of inspirational artists, the likes of concert pianists David Helfgott (as immortalised in the biopic Shine) and Michael Kieran Harvey (1993 Ivo Pogorelic Piano Competition joint winner), shakuhachi grand master Riley Lee (TaikOz), didgeridoo virtuoso Mark Atkins (Led Zepplin/Philip Glass) and marimba soloist Bogdan Bacanu (Austria). He has worked also with a roll call of distinguished orchestral conductors including Gunther Schuller, Lorraine Vaillancourt and Olari Elts.

A renegade on many fronts who actively embraces the crossover between different music genres, Parnell was featured soloist in the ASO’s 2006 Edge series where he performed orchestral versions of rock songs. He has given numerous performances for ABC Classic FM’s National Sunday Live programs and made Australian premieres of new compositions including Estonian composer Erkki-Sven Tüür’s percussion concerto, Magma. Parnell attracted world-wide attention in 2008 by recording one of the world’s first solo classical vibraphone albums, Classical Vibes, for ABC Classics in Australia, which followed his debut album, Generally Spoken It’s Nothing but Rhythm.

This article is about a group of adults with physical challenges and musical abilities…The Sylvanbeats!!

The Sylvanbeats originally formed from a weekly drumming group which started up in 2010 after some of the guys from Sylvanvale Disability Services took part in some drumming workshops at the Spark Creative Arts festival and loved it.

We started off with eleven of us and a stack of Cajon drums and small hand percussion. We experimented with how we could use Cajons with the group – some sitting on the Cajons, some playing them like table tops, some using sticks and mallets. The first year was all about learning to play, learning to listen, connecting with each other, and having fun.

In time as our musical skills got better and better, we started doing small performances for friends and families. In 2012, we applied and were accepted to present at Arts Activate, the international Accessible Arts conference held in Sydney. This was the first time we had performed as a group in a professional theatre – and was a huge buzz.

We were then invited to perform at the launch of Hiromi Tango’s exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art and for the Culturally Diverse Carer’s Expo this year. Upcoming performances include at the Australasian Society for Intellectual Disability conference dinner this November in Darling Harbour and co-running some workshops with young people with challenges in primary schools.

More recently Andrew Hewitt has come in to run some awesome workshops…and he is a big HIT (excuse the pun) with everyone. We’re all looking forward to him doing more work with us.

All of our performance pieces are created by the group. The guys come up with beats, tempos, grooves and solos and then together we weave them into a piece. From the start we have explored dynamics, so as well as rocking out we also create super gentle soundscapes and grooves. We’re always looking for ways to extend ourselves and each other as far as we can. Some of us have better rhythm than others, some have more mobility than others, but as a group we gel… actually we rock!

With thanks to Marti Travers and Sue Popplewell from Sylvanvale Disability Services for their continued support, to Andrew Hewitt for including us with Can-Do Musos, and to the Sylvanbeats for sharing their grooves and spirits with the world!

I caught up with Sergio Ramos – Drum kit player, Cajon player, and Director of the annual International Cajon Seminario – to talk to him about his unique perspective on the Cajon and Drum kit. Sergio is one of Spain’s leading players and was a founding member and player with Grammy award winning band Ojos de Brujo for many years.

Some Comments from Past Workshops

“We were thrilled with your professionalism and interactions with the boys. You gave the boys a new outlook and way to express themselves. You were the key to unlocking the magic within!”
Ann Dunbar, Teacher, Putland Education and Training Unit

“The kids really responded well. Bright, smiles and some kids really came out of their shells and shined. It was amazing. The time flew by and the kids were absorbed for the entire time. The body percussion and drumming were perfectly aimed at and suited the ages of the kids.”
Katie Everett, – Sydney South West Area Holiday Program

“I was impressed by the way the workshops generated happiness! They were positive for every participant, whether shy, anxious, or boisterous, and I loved how Claudia managed the group, and brought the group together to put on a performance.”

Meryn O’Brian, Burnside Family Learning Centre
